Lincolnland Club and District Leaders,

This edition of "Around Lincolnland" features a recent community activity supported by the Exchange Club of North Chicago.  The information below is from an October 12th Suburban Chicago News article written by Kendrick Marshall.  For more information on the Exchange Club of North Chicago, please contact Club President Elsye Williams at elsyewilliams@yahoo.com.

North Chicago High School Junior Daelane Shackleford learned an important lesson Saturday morning.  "Cleanliness", he said while picking up trash and tree branches in a Lincoln Street alley.  "That's what I learned."

Dozens of young volunteers and supervisors picked up trash along streets and removed graffiti from buildings as part of Fall Cleanup 2009.  Also involved were leaders from the North Chicago Exchange Club, North Chicago High School football team, Foss Park District, and Waukegan Township.

"We wanted to put something back into the community to beautify the city.  I think it has been very positive," said Mayor Leon Rockingham.  "Hopefully, this is not going to be a one-time shot.  Maybe we will do this more times throughout the year."

North Chicago High football player Ivan Gibson was excited he was given the opportunity to change the perception that teenagers are apathetic about their surroundings.  "I'm helping my community.  A lot of people don't think we love our community, but we do," Gibson said.  "Whatever I can do for the city that is positive, I will do it.  We love North Chicago."

Rockingham said involving youth can only create stronger bonds between them and residents.  "It gives them a sense of pride also.  It lets them know that there is pride in the community that extends throughout North Chicago."

Thanks for all you do in the Spirit of Exchange.

Lincolnland Club and District Leaders,

Don't forget, the Lincolnland Mid-Year Conference will be on Saturday, December 5th, at the Hawthorn Suites in Bloomington.  Along with various discussions on District and National issues, the conference will include a club officer training session, an Exchange Club trivia tournament, and some fine Exchange camaraderie.  The conference cost is $30 per person including lunch and $50 per person including dinner.  I've attached a conference registration form with the preliminary agenda, and please forward this information to your club members.  If you have any questions or comments on the conference, please contact me at my home or business phone numbers or at my e-mail addresses below.  A block of hotel rooms have been arranged at the Hawthorn Suites at the special rate of $70 per night for Friday and Saturday, December 4th and 5th.  For reservations, please contact the hotel directly at (309) 829-8111 by November 4th and ask for the Lincolnland Exchange Clubs rate.

Progress is being made on a new Exchange Club in Libertyville-Mundelein-Vernon Hills.  The next two meetings for potential Exchangites are scheduled for October 27th and November 10th.  Stay tuned!

A note from Rantoul President-Elect John Vasquez: The Rantoul Exchange Club will be displaying flags on Illinois Route 136 in honor of Rantoul native Chris Rudzinski, who gave his life while serving in the Middle East.  With Veterans Day approaching, this is a strong reminder of the dedication and sacrifice that our service members put forth.  Thank you to all our veterans and service members.

A reminder for Club Treasurers and Finance Committees: The deadline for submitting Form 990 to the IRS is November 15th.

A reminder for all Lincolnland Exchangites: If you're looking for a new member orientation presentation, a 5As form, or other information about Lincolnland, please visit our district website at www.lincolnlandexchange.com.

And finally, congratulations to the Exchange Clubs of Tri-Cities and Grayslake on their successful fundraisers last week.  Community members enjoyed delicious meals at Tri-Cities' 29th Annual Spaghetti Dinner on Tuesday, October 13th, and at Grayslake's Annual Pancake Breakfast at the Grayslake Fire Department on Sunday, October 18th.  Along with enthusiastic Exchangites, the Tri-Cities dinner crew was supplemented with volunteers from Kohl's and Harris Bank, and the Grayslake breakfast crew had volunteer help from the Grayslake Exchangettes, Fire Department, and Cub Scout Pack 96. Grayslake's breakfast also included a "firefighter fashion show", displays and demonstrations on fire prevention and safety, and a visit by Time Out Teddy.  A great time was had by all.

Thanks for all you do in the Spirit of Exchange.
